December Detox Your Life | Day 11: Be Alert And Stay Safe
One of the things we can do to make positive changes in our life is to take steps to become more secure. It will lead us to feel safer which in turn will help us reduce stress and anxiety.
The holidays are a busy time of year when many of us will be busy shopping and running errands in order to get ready. We must not forget that during this time of year, criminals will also be out and about looking for easy targets. Therefore it is very important that we all stay alert during the hectic holiday season.
Thanks to the City of Dublin’s Police Department who posted the following Holiday Safety Tips, we have some good, sound advice on how to stay safe.
Parking lot tips
- When shopping, park under or nearby sources of light and lock the doors.
- Remove anything from the car with your home address on it and never have your home address plugged into your GPS system (use a nearby store’s address instead).
- Always have you car keys in your hand before walking to your car and scan the area around and inside your car to be sure no one is hiding.
- If you make other stops, lock packages in the trunk or place them out of view.
Tips while in stores and malls
- Women should carry purses under their arms. Men should carry their wallets in their front pant pocket or inside coat pocket.
- Try to avoid carrying large amounts of cash whenever possible by paying for purchases with checks or credit cards.
- Never leave packages on floors or counters or leave them unattended when purchasing additional items.
- Beware of strangers approaching you for any reason. Criminals may try various methods of distraction with the intent of taking money or belongings.
Home Safety Tips
- Be extra cautious about locking doors and windows when you leave the house.
- Install automatic timers or sensor lights on the outside of your home if you go on vacation or out for the evening.
- Have a neighbor or friend watch your house, collect your newspapers and mail if you plan on being away for an extended time.
- Leave a radio or television on so the house looks and sounds occupied.
- Large displays of holiday gifts should not be visible from windows and doors
- Be sure your Christmas tree is mounted on a sturdy base so children or elderly persons cannot pull it over on themselves.
- If you use holiday lights, be sure the wiring is not damaged or frayed. Damaged or frayed wiring can cause a fire.
- Never place wrapping paper in your fireplace.
