December Detox Your Life | Day 14: Breathing And Posture

Rebecca KlippenesPerhaps you read our tip on breathing last week but didn’t practice, or maybe you forgot. Well, we’re here to remind you that it’s important to breathe and we’ll share a second way to take a deep breath brought to you today by Rebecca Klippenes, Balance Body Certified Pilates Instructor.

Tip: In the busy holiday season where stress and chaos rules, it’s important to take a few moments for ourselves a la breathing.

Lie flat on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor. Take a deep breath in through your nose, and as you breathe out through your mouth, pull your stomach as tight as you can get it. Repeat 3-4 times. Not only are you releasing some of the holiday stress by practicing deep breathing, you’re also teaching your stomach to support your body while in a relaxed position.

Don’t feel like lying down (or maybe you’re at the mall and surrounded)?

Let’s practice this standing up. Stand tall with your feet lining up with the inside of your hips. Your shoulders should be away from your ears and chest open. Neck and head are long and looking straight ahead. Now take a deep breath in through your nose and out through your mouth. Pull your stomach as tight as you can get it as you breathe out. See? You’re feeling better already.

Rebecca reminds us that as you go about your day, remembering the feeling of keeping your stomach pulled tight will help you protect your back supported while doing everyday tasks such as lifting heavy grocery bags or picking up your children. Remember to stand tall and keep your good posture. Having this good posture will ease pressure off your joints while going through daily activities. If you feel in control of your own body, that leads to feeling in control of how you are able to navigate life.

So remember, deep breathing is something we need to do year round and these tips will help you get there.
