December Detox Your Life | Day 19: Live In The Moment
Often, our stress is brought upon ourselves. We worry about the future, we are scared of what’s happened in the past. Today, we’d like you to explore living in today. We touched on this idea in a few of our previous posts but we’ll give it a name today: mindfulness.
Mindfulness asks us to live in the moment. Enjoy the presence of a loved one, savor the flavor of a warming cup of soup. Don’t let your mind wander into the chaos of the future, or the sadness of the past. Be happy in the moment. Breathing is one technique, but there are a lot of household inspirations that allow you to live in the moment. Instead of tips, we’ll share a few inspirations you can use.
Inspiration #1: Watching a child play
Kids live in the moment all the time. They are not burdened with the past, and they don’t understand the concept of the future. It’s now that they’re concerned with and they are happy in the now.
Inspiration #2: Washing dishes
For some this is a chore, but when I wash dishes, I often find myself in a sort of quiet meditation. My window peers into the backyard and I’ll watch a little yellow bird eating bugs off my plants in the garden.
Inspiration #3: Gardening
I’ve often wondered why my dad chose to get a PhD, when he’d rather be working in the yard. Every chance he gets, he goes and tends to the plants, mows the lawn, mends broken walls — and he’s happy there. His moment is in the garden.
Inspiration #4: Playing an instrument.
If you’ve played an instrument, then you are familiar with living in the moment. In fact, you are forced to overcome the past through practice, and you cannot claim the future because what matters is what you are playing now.
Inspiration #5: Eating dessert.
Many moments are had eating a lovely dessert. Whether it’s a simple piece of chocolate or a lovely crème brûlée, when eating a dessert we often pause mentally, and simply enjoy.
Try living in the moment today and tell us what inspires you to live in the moment below.
