T’was the night before Christmas and the kids are at home.
Mom & Dad, as usual, are on their smart phones.
The kids are climbing the walls, vying for attention.
But they soon realize that all they had to do was mention…
Ah, it’s Christmas time Mom, it’s Christmas time Dad.
Can’t you tell we want to play with you? Can’t you see you’re making us sad?
Mom & Dad give one another a glance, realizing what they’ve done.
We’ve put our needs first again before all the fun.
So they put down their phones, took a deep breath and said:
“You’re right, let’s play a game as a family before it’s time for bed”.
It’s hard to be present when your computer, iPad or Blackberry is near.
But please remember these moments are fleeting and our kids grow up so fast
We need to be present to those who are in front of us, those who are most dear.
One day until Christmas eve, and two holiday shopping days left. Did you remember to get what you needed? Maybe you spent a little too much? If you read our post on budgeting, but didn’t manage to practice those budgeting tips, we have some additional tips for you.
So you’ve blown your budget. It’s not the end of the world, but here’s what you should do next.
Tip #1: Put away the credit cards.
Time to move to a cash-only system until you’ve got your spending back under control. Cash is psychologically harder to spend than plastic, and this is one of the top tips from experts all around.
Tip #2: Keep that savings buffer (or let it accumulate again).
If you’ve dipped into the savings from holiday overspending, then this is probably the first area to address. Build it back up until you are secure. Skip out on dinners, social nights and whatever other sacrifices to get back into fiscal shape.
Tip #3: Snowflake budget back to financial health.
Since you’ll be on a cash-only system, every time you get the urge to buy a cup of coffee, or snack on some junk food, toss those dollars into a homemade piggy bank and let that accumulate. If you are a debit-only type of person, then transfer those dollars to your credit card debt. Depending on how far you are into the hole, $5-$10 additional payment per week will add a nice bonus to your regular payment (and we seriously hope you aren’t paying minimums only).
And since there are technically two days left to the holiday shopping season, if you were thinking about going out now to get some last minute items, don’t. It’s easy to fall into a trap and overspend at the last minute. Instead, stay home and plan next year’s budget (*wink*).

If there’s one thing that can really make one’s life feel chaotic, it’s clutter. When our closets, cupboards, desks, offices, etc. are cluttered, our mind feels the same way. We tend to feel overwhelmed by it all and often don’t know where to begin to fix it. If you haven’t guessed it yet, I’m talking from experience. My garage is full of boxes, toys, garden tools, oh my! And yet my car, the whole reason for the garage, does not fit due to all the stuff.
At one point we got a storage unit just to free up some of the garage space. How ridiculous is that? We were paying to store stuff, things that we don’t use but are afraid to throw out. Not that long ago I heard on NPR (National Public Radio) that self-storage business has become so big because we love to own and have things. They said, “…the unglamorous self-storage business now has revenues exceeding the annual US movie box-office sales…The industry’s annual sales are about $15 billion.” Can you believe that?
When we begin to let go of material things we gain a little mental freedom. It’s good to purge oneself of all the stuff we don’t need or use. Considering we’re doing a Detox Your Life series, this is the ideal time to start. I’m willing to guess that there’s a good majority of us out there. Why else would there be a $15 billion a year business in existence if there weren’t more than a few of us?
We can start small. Even cleaning up the smallest drawer will make you feel better. Heck, start with your purse or wallet! Get rid of those old receipts or the business card you took off that guy when you know you’re never going to use him. Really. I recently cleaned out two bedroom closets and the coat closet and I swear I was walking with more of a bounce in my step (or was that all the holiday cookies I’ve been eating?). Regardless, of the reason behind the bounce I did feel in a much better mood because of the de-cluttering of my closets. I felt I could think clearer because my mind was clear.
I wouldn’t suggest starting with the biggest project unless you have some time off work or better yet, if you’re able to enlist a friend or family member to help. We all know someone that is super organized. That’s the person you want to help you. You can learn a lot from them, especially if you can get them to “show” you how it’s done while you sit back and pretend to take notes. No, just kidding. It really is more freeing if you do the work yourself. Besides, you have a better idea of where everything should go (hint: Not back in the drawer!). Please remember to keep things out of our landfills by recycling paper, giving usable items to charity or repurposing the item.

Day 20: Mind Your Chin
Today, let’s take notice of our posture, it can tell us a lot about how other people see us as well as how we feel about and in ourselves. There was a good reason our mothers always told us to “sit up straight” or “stop slouching”. Our posture greatly affects our well-being.
Good posture makes us look slimmer, younger and more confident. When our body is aligned properly we look taller and more at ease. Try standing in front of a mirror and take a deep breath while standing up straighter. Do you see the difference it makes in your face and body? Do you notice how much more air your lungs can take in? Do you feel better mentally? Compare that look and feeling to someone who is slumped over at their desk or slouched while standing and walking. Do they come across as being confident to you? Do they tend to look a bit frumpy and older?
Having good posture isn’t only good for our appearance and confidence it plays a major role in our physical health. When we have poor posture our spine is not aligned correctly. Therefore, our muscles, organs, joints and bones are not where they should be. Over time, the result will inevitably be strain issues such as neck, shoulder and back pain. Having good posture also increases lung capacity. This helps to transport oxygen and nutrition around the body. When our posture is upright and open, there is more room in the abdominal cavity, which improves the health of our organs giving them more room to function properly in addition to making your belly look slimmer.
Physical Therapist Gloria Reyes of Action in Motion in Danville, California has spent her career teaching others how to realign their bodies through Pilates in order to achieve optimal physical health. How do I know this? I’ve been a client of Gloria’s less than a year and I went from chronic shoulder and neck pain for the last 20 plus years to virtually pain-free days and months.
To achieve proper posture, Gloria has some words of wisdom she graciously shared with us…
When we think of good posture we often engage the shoulders and point our chest forward, so we correct the “slouch”. That’s a good start but very incomplete when I consider the main problems I treat as a Physical Therapist.
Tip: Be a fresh ice cream sundae.
Gloria likes to create a visual that is very easy to remember, an ice cream scoop served on a cute bowl topped with a cherry! The anatomy parts that correspond to the bowl is your pelvis, the ice cream is your body from belly to neck, and the cherry is your head. You often see ice cream forward spilling in front of the bowl, and cherries even more forward spilled in front of the ice cream. So she’d like to propose to you to keep your cherry on top by minding your chin.
Our chin pokes forward while driving, doing computer work and while just listening closely to someone talking to us. Keep three things in mind, your bowl, your ice cream and particularly your cherry on top.
Ask yourself: “Where is my chin?”

Day 19: Live In The Moment
Often, our stress is brought upon ourselves. We worry about the future, we are scared of what’s happened in the past. Today, we’d like you to explore living in today. We touched on this idea in a few of our previous posts but we’ll give it a name today: mindfulness.
Mindfulness asks us to live in the moment. Enjoy the presence of a loved one, savor the flavor of a warming cup of soup. Don’t let your mind wander into the chaos of the future, or the sadness of the past. Be happy in the moment. Breathing is one technique, but there are a lot of household inspirations that allow you to live in the moment. Instead of tips, we’ll share a few inspirations you can use.
Inspiration #1: Watching a child play
Kids live in the moment all the time. They are not burdened with the past, and they don’t understand the concept of the future. It’s now that they’re concerned with and they are happy in the now.
Inspiration #2: Washing dishes
For some this is a chore, but when I wash dishes, I often find myself in a sort of quiet meditation. My window peers into the backyard and I’ll watch a little yellow bird eating bugs off my plants in the garden.
Inspiration #3: Gardening
I’ve often wondered why my dad chose to get a PhD, when he’d rather be working in the yard. Every chance he gets, he goes and tends to the plants, mows the lawn, mends broken walls — and he’s happy there. His moment is in the garden.
Inspiration #4: Playing an instrument.
If you’ve played an instrument, then you are familiar with living in the moment. In fact, you are forced to overcome the past through practice, and you cannot claim the future because what matters is what you are playing now.
Inspiration #5: Eating dessert.
Many moments are had eating a lovely dessert. Whether it’s a simple piece of chocolate or a lovely crème brûlée, when eating a dessert we often pause mentally, and simply enjoy.
Try living in the moment today and tell us what inspires you to live in the moment below.

Day 18: Laugh It Up
For some of us, this New Year’s we’ll be resolving to reduce our stress. Well, we’ve discovered that one of the best ways to reduce stress is to start laughing. That’s right. Laugh the stress away.
We love to laugh, and laughter loves us back — in more ways than one. It relieves stress, is as effective as moderate exersize and well, it’s hilarious. Here are a few short term benefits of laughter as described by Mayo Clinic:
Laughter can:
- Stimulate many organs by increasing your intake of oxygen-rich air
- Relieve you of stress while at the same time increasing your heart rate and blood pressure
- Stimulate circulation and aid muscle relaxation
In the long run, you’ll benefit from laughter through an improved immune system thanks to decreased stress, pain relief, and coping. It’s not hard to see the humor in things but if you are having trouble getting started, we’ll give you a quick tip.
Tip: Surround yourself with humor.
You’ve heard the rumor: laughter IS contagious; so why not take a step in the funny direction? Read a few comics, check out funny blogs, watch a few great YouTube videos, or go to a comedy show. For those of you stuck in an office all day, print out a few comic strips (we recommend Dilbert) and post them in your cubicle. It’s easy to do, and it’ll make a real positive difference in your life.
We’ll leave you with this famous number that’s guaranteed to make you smile.

Day 17: Detox Your Skin
When we talk about “Detoxing Your Life” we can generally create a list of things in our lives that need detoxifying. We might even look at the conventional – detoxing our bodies in one way or another. And yet, we don’t usually consider the importance of our skin on that list. It is our body’s largest organ and it takes the wear and tear of the food we eat, the air we breathe, the water with which we bathe and the products we put on it. Add to that the effects of aging and you can begin to appreciate how much attention our skin deserves.
What sort of things can we do to be kinder to our skin? Eating plenty of whole foods (organic preferably), drinking lots of clean filtered water, and using products that have little to no junk in them (chemicals and such). Then, as often as you can, give your body a well-earned spa treatment at home. In the spa regimen, be sure to exfoliate. Exfoliating your skin at least once a week will help it to look younger and healthier.
Exfoliating your skin is beneficial for a number of reasons. We should exfoliate year round but during the winter months especially, our aging skin can begin to look dull, drab and lifeless. On average our bodies have produced thousands upon thousands of new skin cells since conception, resulting in a new layer of skin every two to four weeks. This starts to decline by our mid-twenties (yikes!). It’s the dead skin cells that often need help to slough off in order for the new, younger skin to be revealed. Exfoliation provides the assistance your skin needs to reveal the fresher, younger, glowing you! If the old, dead skin cells are not removed they have a tendency to clog our pores resulting in pimples and blackheads (not to mention that dull, drab look as well).
The good news is that there are a great many exfoliating products on the market today from which to choose. JK Naturals has a new line of salt scrubs (available soon at jknaturals.com). However, you don’t even have to leave your kitchen to get all you need to have effective exfoliating results. Sure the oils and salts might not match the optimal spa grade quality we use and you might not have access to a variety of pure essential oils but it will be a good start until you can place your order and receive it.
Tip: Use household kitchen ingredients to create a homemade exfoliating scrub
So here’s all you need from your kitchen: Extra virgin olive oil or grapeseed oil (you don’t want a heavy, pore-clogging oil – that will defeat the purpose) and about 1 cup of sea salt (coarse, medium or fine depending on your skin’s sensitivity to abrasion). Pour enough oil over the sea salt so it just covers it.
How to use it and pamper yourself at the same time:
1. Draw yourself a nice warm bath. If you have it, add up to 20 drops of your favorite essential oil blend (no need to do this if your salt scrub already contains essential oils)
2. Have your salt scrub handy near by.
3. Relax and soak in the tub for at least 10 minutes, allowing time for your skin to soften before you begin to exfoliate.
4. You can either apply the salt scrub while in the bath, lifting each limb out of the water to do so, or stand up and apply salt scrub using firm circular movements all over your body. When finished, lay back in the bath and carry on rubbing until all the salt scrub has been washed off.
5. Get out of the bath and towel yourself dry before applying moisturizer all over your body. **Exfoliating also allows moisturizer to penetrate more deeply.
6. Finally jump into a pair of your warmest pajamas, and hop into bed with a good book for a restorative early night.
Want a quicker version? Wet your entire body in the shower, turn water off while you apply salt scrub using a firm, circular motion, rinse off then towel dry.
If you’ve had an especially hectic week, this is a really nice way to end it and start fresh for the weekend. Enjoy!

It often seems as though life is just passing us by. I mean really, where did 2010 go? I can’t believe how quickly the days and weeks are flying by. Yet, every day seems to be the same thing, right? Wake up, go to school and/or work, come home, catch up on things, lounge in front of the TV, go to bed and do the same thing the next day. It seems as though the older I get, the more energy is required to take out some time just for me. We rarely do that for ourselves but our well-being depends on it. If you have young kids like me, it’s not easy to do, but it is essential. I’m a nicer mom when I take time out for me once in a while. But even all you younger, single kid-less people need to take time away from your computers and smart phones and enjoy life too!
So let’s say we do have a free night to ourselves, then what? What’s there to do? Go out for dinner? Go see a movie with friends. Yeah sure, that’s really wonderful too but if you’re anything like me, you’re always looking for something to do that’s different. Actually, there’s a whole slew of things that are fun, different and don’t cost a lot. During the remainder couple of weeks of this December Detox Your Life blog, I think it’s important for us to do something fun and different for ourselves at least once a week. I’m happy to offer a few suggestions each week of no-money fun things to do or things that don’t cost a lot but get us out of the house, out of our mundane routines and liven up our souls. However, I’m equally happy to receive ideas from any of you of things you’ve done and are a whole lot of fun and different (E for Everyone only please, this is a respectable blog community after all!).
So here are just a couple of my suggestions but if you have better ideas, go ahead and do them or better yet, share them with us. For starters…
Tip: Go to a theater.
No, not the “movies” — a real-life playhouse. How often have you gone to the theater? Ok, I know this isn’t exactly on the low end of the cost spectrum but it is a lot of fun and you can get the cheap seats. Plus, due to the holiday season, there are a variety of different, wonderful and magical things going on stages all across our country, especially locally. You know, I’ve never seen The Nutcracker. I heard it’s beautiful to watch and I love to watch dancing of any kind. I actually think I’m too late for The Nutcracker (it played at one of our local theaters two weeks ago) but you get my point. Let’s try to get theater tickets to see a symphony, play or ballet before the end of this month and we can share our experiences.
Tip #2: If the theater just isn’t in your budget, get a group of friends together and play a good old-fashioned game of Pictionary.
It’s not exactly theater but it is good for a laugh!

If you’ve been reading our December Detox Your Life blog from the beginning, you’d know that the idea behind it was to form a community where we could make small positive impacts in our daily life. We post, share and discuss tips from local experts, which help to sustain our community. All the while, your participation moves us closer to our mutual success as we attain our New Year’s resolutions.
However, for this one particular topic, I need to break with our local theme just a bit to share a terrific website I discovered recently. The website is called learnvest.com and it was founded in 2008 by a 26 year old New Yorker Alexa von Tobel. She dropped out of Harvard Business School in order to start this company. The idea behind it is to provide a trusted, free resource targeted at helping young people (ages 20 – 50), especially women, achieve financial literacy. The website offers many tools, including ones to help make a budget; show you exactly how to get out of debt; plan for retirement or even get a mortgage. What makes this refreshing it is that it is preemptive: advice to keep from being in debt rather than digging out of it. All the information is free, unbiased and trusted.
I recently heard Alexa on a radio talk show talking about how to budget this holiday season. She reported that last year, people spent an average of $476 buying gifts. She was generous enough to offer a few tips on how to be thoughtful while enjoying the holiday season and still give gifts.
Tip #1: Don’t go into debt when giving gifts over the holidays!
Make a budget before you hit the stores. Make a list of the people you wish to buy for and write a number beside each of what you can afford to spend. Add the numbers up to get your total budget before you start buying.
Tip #2: Don’t buy wrapping paper.
The average person spends $50 on wrapping paper, bows & gift tags and that doesn’t include cards. Wrap with newspaper, brown paper shopping bags or gift bags you have in the house. Get creative.
Tip #3: It’s OK to re-gift.
Give it to someone on your list who you know will enjoy it more than you.
If we can follow Alexa’s sound advice, we can get through the holidays debt-free and, as a result, stress-free.
